Rechargeable vs Battery Hearing Aids: Which Should You Choose?
Rechargeable hearing aids overtook battery aids in the UK private market around 2022 and now make up over 75% of fittings. They're more convenient, more reliable, and they cost about the same. But traditional disposable-battery aids haven't disappeared and still have specific use cases. Here's how to choose.
What rechargeable hearing aids are
A rechargeable hearing aid has a sealed lithium-ion battery built into the device. You place the aid in a charging case overnight (or for 3 to 4 hours during the day). The case usually holds enough power for several days of charging without being plugged in.
Most major brands have rechargeable platforms across their RIC and BTE ranges: Phonak Audeo Sphere Rechargeable, Oticon Intent , Widex Allure R, Starkey Omega Rechargeable, ReSound Vivia Rechargeable, Signia IX Rechargeable. The mid-tier and flagship lines are nearly all rechargeable. Entry-level lines still offer batteries.
What battery hearing aids are
A traditional aid uses a small zinc-air disposable battery (size 10, 312, 13 or 675 depending on the aid). You change the battery every 3 to 10 days depending on size and how heavily you stream. Batteries cost roughly £30 to £50 a year.
Why rechargeables won the market
Convenience
No fumbling with tiny batteries. No carrying spares. No worrying about hearing aids dying in the middle of a meeting. Drop them in the case at night, pick them up in the morning ready to go.
Better for dexterity issues
Changing a size-10 battery every 3 days with arthritic fingers is a real problem. The charging case is dramatically easier: open, slot in, close.
Reliability
Sealed casings mean no battery door. Fewer moisture ingress points, fewer mechanical failures, longer warranty life. Repair rates on modern rechargeables are lower than on equivalent battery aids.
Environmental impact
Around 1.4 billion hearing aid batteries are thrown away globally each year. A rechargeable pair eliminates about 350 to 500 disposable batteries over its lifetime.
Hidden cost saving
Battery cost over 5 years is roughly £150 to £250 per ear. Most rechargeable platforms are now the same upfront price as their battery equivalents. So the rechargeable wins on total cost.
Where battery aids still win
Smallest possible aids
Lithium batteries take space. The smallest custom aids (CIC, IIC) are still mostly battery. There isn't room for a rechargeable cell that lasts a full day. If you want the smallest possible aid, it'll be battery.
Off-grid use
Hiking for two weeks with no mains power, regular travel through power cuts, working in remote locations. Battery aids run forever as long as you can carry spares. Rechargeable cases need charging.
Always-on emergency backup
If you can't risk being without hearing for any period, a battery aid plus a pocket of spare batteries is bulletproof. A rechargeable that hasn't been charged is a paperweight for an hour.
Some severe-loss BTEs
Super-power BTEs for profound loss need size-675 batteries, the largest, and they last longest. Rechargeable super-power models exist but for very heavy users the run-time can be tight.
Daily life with a rechargeable
Morning routine: open the case, pick out your aids, put them in your ears. Done in 5 seconds.
Evening routine: take them out, place them in the case, close the lid. They're charging from the lid contacts. The case itself plugs in via USB-C every 3 to 5 days.
A flagship rechargeable RIC in 2026 runs 16 to 22+ hours on a single charge for normal use, slightly less if you stream heavily. The case provides 3 to 5 additional full charges, so you can travel for several days without mains power.
What happens when the rechargeable battery degrades?
Lithium-ion batteries lose capacity over time, typically about 20% over 4 to 5 years of daily use. Most manufacturers will replace the battery during a service appointment (Phonak, Oticon and Widex all offer this).
My honest recommendation
Rechargeable for almost everyone. If you're fitting your first set of aids in 2026, the benefits outweigh the constraints for the vast majority of patients.
Battery aids if: you want the smallest custom aid possible, you travel constantly with no mains power, or you genuinely never want to think about charging.
