Our Ear Wax Removal Methods
Microsuction
Microsuction is considered a safe and precise method of ear wax removal. A suction device is used to gently remove wax under direct visualisation using a video otoscope or microscope.
No water is used – making it ideal for people with perforated eardrums, grommets, or previous ear surgery
Wax is removed in a controlled, targeted way while the clinician watches through magnification
Often the fastest method, and well-tolerated even in sensitive ears
This is usually our first choice where appropriate due to its precision and comfort.
Irrigation
Irrigation is a safe and effective method of ear wax removal that uses a controlled stream of warm water to gently flush softened wax out of the ear canal. We use irrigators designed specifically for ear care ensuring both comfort and precision.
Ideal for patients with soft or partially mobile wax
Performed only after thorough ear health assessment
A good option when microsuction isn't suitable or preferred
Carried out using sterile, temperature-controlled water
Note: This method is not used if you have a perforated eardrum, a history of ear infections, or certain medical conditions. In these cases, we’ll use an alternative method such as microsuction or manual removal.
Manual tools
Manual removal involves using sterile instruments such as curettes, forceps, or ear hooks to carefully extract wax from the ear canal.
Done under direct vision using magnification
Most useful for dry, impacted wax or for patients who cannot tolerate suction or irrigation
May be combined with other methods as part of a multi-technique approach
This technique is especially effective for hard wax in the outer third of the canal, or where small, targeted removal is needed.
